Siri v Cortana v Google: Who's best?

Cortana's learning the neighbourhood. Google's digital assistant can't tell a joke. And Siri apparently has a thing for the metric system. Those are just a few of the things learned after a face-off for the three leading digital assistants. Apple's Siri and "OK Google" - they're not big on personification at Google - are now standard on smartphones; Microsoft recently added its Cortana service to Windows 10, so it works on PCs, too. Now that just about anyone can talk to their phone or computer, we wanted to see what happens when you try. Unsurprisingly, none of the assistants is perfect. Surprisingly, they do have distinct personalities, even if they're just deliberate artifacts of their creators. I asked the same 10 questions of each service, using an iPhone with Siri, a Nexus phone with Android's "OK Google" and a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet with Cortana. INFORMATION PLEASE First up: Some basic factual questions. All thre

Microsoft Corporation's Worst Product in 2015

Image
Microsoft has made plenty of missteps in mobile, and its Windows Phones continue to suffer as a result. It's no secret that Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has a major smartphone problem. It's not that the company hasn't tried to get its Windows phones off the ground. It worked closely with Nokia to produce a wide range of devices, then bought Nokia's mobile division for $7.2 billion, only to write down the purchase earlier this year. If that weren't enough, the global market share of Windows phones has continued to decline over the past few years. That's particularly bad considering the devices took about 3% market share at their peak. All of these missteps and and failures along the way have earned Windows phones the worst Microsoft product designation this year. Some may argue that Microsoft hasn't made its own smartphones until recently, so it's not the company's fault for its poor performance. But I'd argue that software is the main ingredien

Windows 10 Mobile rolling out to eligible devices in waves, new Microsoft list implies Source:WB

Reddit, often a first source of inside scoop, was at it again this morning, this time with Redditor betrion referencing a new Microsoft list that appears to indicate which Windows Phone devices will get updates to Windows 10 Mobile, and in what order. The source material is fairly dense, comprised of a WP 8.1 to 10 Device Upgrade Eligibility list in XML format, but parsing the data may reveal some interesting tidbits. Apparently, Windows 10 Mobile will release in three batches, and as expected some devices won’t get Windows 10 Mobile at all. It’s also possible that some of the devices on the “never” list mean that Microsoft won’t be providing the update and that it’s up to the manufacturer. Looking at the Microsoft list page, the XML document seems to be intended to feed data to an upcoming Windows Phone app. Waiting for that app to release before concluding anything might be the best option. Supported Operating System Windows Phone 8.1 none. used by WP app. From what we can

Windows 10 Mobile will begin its rollout to existing Windows Phone 8.1 devices in early 2016 Source: WB

Microsoft has today announced that Windows 10 Mobile will begin its official rollout for existing Windows Phone 8.1 handsets in early 2016, meaning we could see the first devices get an upgrade in just a few short weeks. This date has slipped from its originally planned launch however, as Microsoft originally wanted Windows 10 Mobile to begin it’s official rollout before the years end. The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones. I hear one of the reasons why Microsoft has decided to wait until early 2016 is due to the many problems users have been facing running the shipping build of Windows 10 Mobile on the Lumia 550/950/XL, as well as on older handsets part of the Insider preview. Microsoft has been franticly working on cumulative updates for Windows 10 Mobile ever since, releasing its latest patch earlier today.

Microsoft releases Microsoft Apps Android app highlighting Microsoft’s Android apps

Image
Yes, that’s right: Microsoft has released an Android app that does nothing but list the apps that the company has pushed to Google’s Windows 10 Mobile rival. But there’s likely more behind this simple app than meets the eye. Microsoft’s cross-platform strategy has been mentioned millions of times in the last year or so. Pushing Microsoft productivity and other solutions to iOS and Android has been key to maintaining Microsoft’s relevance while Windows Phone (and Windows 10 Mobile) continues to languish. Windows 10 is out and going strong, and Universal Apps continue to release the give some hope that Microsoft’s mobile platform will benefit from the company’s strengths on desktops, notebook, and hybrids. Nevertheless, Microsoft wants people using its solutions in Android, and so this new app is a thinly veiled attempt to give their own apps some prominence in Google’s Play Store. The app lists over 80 Microsoft apps, ranging from Office apps to Skype to games, search too

Microsoft rolls out Cortana to iOS and Android, to take on Siri and Google Now

Image
Cortana is no longer limited to devices running Windows 10. After short period of public beta testing, Microsoft's digital assistant is now rolling out not only to iOS and Android, but also Cyanogen OS devices. Just as on Windows 10 Mobile handsets, these new releases include many of the features that are found in the desktop version of Cortana. There are, however, some functions that remain exclusive to Windows phones -- you cannot, for example, change system settings in iOS and Android nor, frustratingly, use the hands-free "Hey Cortana" voice command. Cyanogen users get something of a better deal. Cortana is more deeply integrated into the OS meaning that it is possible to voice activate the tool from any screen, and also toggle system settings. The Cyanogen version of the app will be available later this month for OnePlus One users, but iOS and Android versions are available in the US and China right now. #Again Microsoft is working on bridges to get your apps to Windows 10

Microsoft launched Windows 10 this past summer and it has, mostly, had a good reaction from users. After Windows 8 there really was no direction to go but up. Of course any platform needs apps to survive, and Windows 10 is no exception. In order to expedite the influx of new apps and websites, Microsoft is building bridges. That is literally the name for it. The company wants developers to move their apps into its new ecosystem and it has already launched bridges for iOS and hosted web apps. Microsoft's Sascha Corti claims that "A Windows Bridge for Classic Windows Apps, the Mobilize.net Silverlight Bridge and a Windows Bridge for Android" are on the way. The existing iOS Bridge is an open-source project and you can download from GitHub. You'll also need Visual Studio to get going, but it too is free and Microsoft points out that you can get it here. This is, of course, geared towards developers, so you'll need some skills to do it. As Microsoft points ou

How To Backup Data Without Booting Into Windows (The Easy Way) Source:Into Windows

Cortana may reportedly float around on the Windows 10 desktop via a future update

A new report claimes that a future update for Windows 10 could allow its Cortana digital assistant to float around on the desktop, rather than stay fixed in the Start menu. According to The Verge's unnamed sources: "This floating mechanism would allow Cortana to appear on top of documents, contextually, and provide information and assistance. We're told it's more of a powerful search tool, than an annoying animated character like Clippy. If Microsoft pushes ahead with its Cortana plans then the digital assistant will be able to control even more Windows features, like the ability to mute all incoming notifications quickly." The report also says that Cortana could be integrated more directly inside Office 365 in future updates and adds that the Action Center in Windows 10 could add more functions as well. Windows 10 Mobile could also see more Cortana features added in future updates, according to The Verge: "On the phone side, Microsoft is currently

How to use music control in Microsoft Band 2 Source: WC

Image
First, you'll need to open a music app on your phone. There are plenty of options like Pandora, Spotify, MixRadio, and Groove Music. On your Microsoft Band 2, simply double-click the power button. The touchscreen displays the song title and lets you pause and play, skip forward and back. To adjust the volume, just swipe left or right. In order to get the new features, make sure to download the latest version of the Microsoft Health app. When you open the app, it'll notify you of a software update for your Microsoft Band 2. Other new features were included in the update. The Microsoft Band 2 can now remind you to get up and move when you've been still for too long. You choose the time intervals and the days you want to be reminded. You can also set a period of time when you don't want to receive reminders. Another feature is the ability to select popular options, like yoga or weightlifting, or name your own for exercise.

Twitter app for Windows 10 PC updated with new Moments feature Source: WC

Image
The official Twitter app for Windows 10 PC users has been updated, and it adds the Moments feature that the social network recently introduced on its web site and on its IOS and Android apps. Moments basically groups a bunch of prominent tweets surrounding a particular news story or trending topic so that users can quickly check out the trending messages without having to perform a search. The new version number for the official Twitter Windows 10 PC app is 4.3. This is just for the PC app; it has not been updated for the official Twitter app on Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile.

Latest Windows 10 Mobile updates bypass carriers, update phones directly Source : WinBeta

Microsoft has long used the Windows Update process to keep its operating systems up to date, but earlier this year at Ignite, Microsoft made a somewhat startling promise: that “this continuous update process applies to all Windows 10 devices, including phones.” Up until now, Windows 10 Mobile has received updates through the Windows Insider program, which Microsoft has used as not only a beta testing vehicle but also as a bit of an end around; Insiders could get the latest bits on their phones without having to wait for the dreaded carrier approval. Carriers have been a big roadblock to both the operations and marketing for Windows Phones (and now Windows phones). Even when Microsoft has made strides to introduce new features or fix glaring bugs, users would have to wait, sometimes months and sometimes not receiving the updates at all, while carriers “tested” the upgrades on their networks. With this latest release for Windows 10 Mobile, upgrading the OS to 10586.29, Microsoft has

Spanish mobile operator MoviStar says Windows 10 Mobile update coming in late January 2016

Microsoft hopes that Windows 10 Mobile will replace Windows Phone sooner rather than later. In many cases, the migration depends on the carriers–Microsoft is making efforts to push updates without carrier involvement, but it’s likely going to take a while before an entire mobile OS upgrade bypasses the carriers. At least one mobile operator, however, Spain’s MoviStar, may be playing ball, telling WinBeta reader Antonio that Windows 10 Mobile could come as soon as next January. Hello Antonio. After performing the query confirm us is scheduled to be released at the end of January 2016. Best regards. We hope that MoviStar is on the up-and-up here and can live up to this prediction, because the more devices that run Windows 10 Mobile, the more developers will have incentive to push out Universal Windows apps. We don’t know how many Windows phone are running on MoviStar, but the old adage applies here: every bit helps.
